(LAGRANGE) — Indiana state health officials have detected bird flu at a commercial duck farm in LaGrange County. It is the first confirmed Indiana case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza since May. The facility, which has a flock of more than 2,600 ducks, was not identified by name.
A control area with a 6.2-mile radius and a surveillance zone with a 12.4-mile radius have been established around the farm, including portions of LaGrange, Elkhart and Noble counties. Testing will be conducted on nearby flocks to determine if the virus has spread.
Federal officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture stated that avian influenza does not pose a food safety risk and that cooked poultry and eggs remain safe to eat. Indiana produces more ducks than any other U.S. state.
