(ELKHART) – A charge of murder has been filed against an Elkhart man for allegedly shooting and killing a recently released sex offender.
The Elkhart Police Department says 35 year old Nicholas Stanley is accused of killing 35-year-old Allen Cogswell early Tuesday morning at the Daylite Inn on Cassopolis Street in Elkhart.
Authorities say that Cogswell was a sex offender. He had been released from prison in May, and that Stanley is related to a victim in that case.
Police say a witness told them that he saw Stanley looking in the window of Cogswell’s room and then knocked on the door. When Cogswell opened the door, Stanley reportedly began shooting.
Cogswell died from shots to the chest and the head.
Police say that they used surveillance videos from nearby businesses and a Flock camera system to identify Stanley as the suspect.
Stanley is being held without bond at the Elkhart County Jail. He is scheduled to have an initial hearing on July 3.
