(SHIPSHEWANA) – A two vehicle crash claimed the life of a teen and injured a child.
LaGrange County Chief Deputy Sheriff Juan Arroyo says deputies were called out to County Road 3500 West and State Road 120 in Shipshewana just after 11:30 Thursday morning for a crash between an UTV and a car.
Investigators say that a vehicle driven by 32 year old Branden Sanford of Coldwater was traveling east on State Road 120 when a UTV attempted to cross the road at a 90 degree angle traveling south. Sanford told deputies he was unable to avoid a collision and both occupants of the UTV were ejected.
The driver of the UTV, 13 year old Karson Hochstetler of Shipshewana, was pronounced dead at the scene, despite lifesaving measures by first responders.
His passenger, 6 year old Merle Herschberger of Shipshewana, was flown by Parkview Samaritan Helicopter to Parkview Regional Medical Center and is listed in critical condition with unknown internal injuries.
Sanford was not injured in the crash.
Assisting at the scene were the LaGrange and Westview Police Departments, the Howe Fire Department, and the Indiana State Police.
