Former Coldwater Teacher And Coach Fred Hobart Passes Away

(COLDWATER) – A long time Coldwater Schools teacher, coach and administrator has passed away.

Dutcher Funeral Home says that Fred Hobart died August 6 at the age of 89.

Hobart was born in Coldwater on April 12, 1936. Following his graduation from Coldwater High School in 1954, he attended and graduated from Adrian College in 1958 and then earned his Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University.

Hobart coached football and basketball from 1958 to 1964 at Coldwater St. Charles School. He was then recommended by Coach Floyd Eby to replace him as the head basketball coach at Coldwater High School. He started teaching and coaching at CHS in the 1964-65 school year, and resigned as basketball coach in 1983.

Hobart became the Coldwater High School Assistant Principal in 1984 and later was High School Principal from 1993 to 1996.

After Hobart retired as Principal, he was asked by boys basketball coach David Hammer to be his assistant, which he did for three years. In 1999 he was the assistant coach for Brian Stevens. All total, he coached basketball for 46 years in Coldwater.

Hobart was elected to the Coldwater High School Athletic Hall Of Fame, the Adrian College Athletic Hall Of Fame, and the Michigan High School Athletic Hall Of Fame.
