Coldwater Man Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting A Minor
Wednesday, August 13, 2025

(COLDWATER) – A Coldwater man has been sentenced on multiple charges of sexually assaulting a minor.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says on Monday, 55 year old Alex New was sentenced in Branch County Circuit Court to 58 years in prison. He was found guilty in June on two counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of second degree criminal sexual conduct involving a minor.

Circuit Court Judge William O’Grady sentenced New to 25 to 50 years on each of the First Degree CSC charges and 8 to 15 years on the Second Degree CSC charge. The sentences will be served consecutively.

New was charged in 2016 by the Branch County Prosecutor’s Office, but he left the area and was able to evade authorities, until he was found in Florida. He was brought back to Coldwater in June 2024 by Operation Survivor Justice, which is a partnership between local county prosecutors, the Michigan Department of Attorney General and the U.S. Marshals Service designed to locate, apprehend and return Michigan fugitive offenders that have outstanding sexual assault warrants.

Court officials say the victim testified at the trial about what happened in 2009 and 2010 when New lived in the home she was staying at. Her mother also testified that she didn’t now about the assaults until 2015, when New moved back after spending 11 months in jail for molesting two other girls.

Following completion of his prison sentence, New would be subject to lifetime electronic monitoring.
