(LANSING) – A former member of the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office will stand trial on multiple felony charges of alleged assaults on an individual.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessell says 43 year old Ronald Leggitt of Marshall waived his preliminary examination and has been bound over to Hillsdale County Circuit Count.
Leggitt is facing seven felony counts of alleged assaults of a woman that was under his supervision in December 2021 at the Hillsdale County Jail. At the time the assaults allegedly happened, Leggitt was a Sergeant with the Sheriff’s Department.
In the early morning hours of December 16, 2021, it’s alleged a woman was brought into custody to the Hillsdale County Jail, where Leggitt was supervising operations. The staff was told the woman had resisted officers during her arrest and the booking process.
At the jail, the woman continued to exhibit resistant and disruptive behavior.
It’s alleged that over 80 minutes, Leggitt assaulted the inmate six times with mace or pepper spray by spraying the irritant into her face from a distance of mere inches. During five of the six alleged assaults, the victim was secured in an emergency restraint chair; restrained in wrist and ankle cuffs as well as a chest restraint.
Leggitt was arrested and charged in March 2024 with six felony counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (a four year felony each ) and a felony count of misconduct in office (a five year felony).
No trial date has been set as of yet.
