(INDIANAPOLIS) – Memorial Day is approaching and the Indiana State Police are going to be increasing patrols, as part of a ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign.
This is a national campaign promoting safe driving habits, specifically the proper use of seatbelts.
Beginning May 17 and running to May 31, Fort Wayne area troopers will join law enforcement across the country to help expand their seatbelt safety efforts.
Douglas Huntsinger, Executive Director for the Indiana Criminal justice Institute says as the summer travel season gets underway, it’s critical to remind all motorists that wearing a seatbelt is not just the law, it’s something that can save your life. Huntsinger says the goal is simple, they want everyone to make it home safely, and buckling up is the first step in achieving that goal.
During the campaign, the Indiana State Police says it will adopt a no-excuses approach to enforcement, issuing citations to anyone not properly restrained.
According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 93.6% of Indiana drivers wear their seatbelts properly, meaning 6.4% remain unrestrained. The Institute says research shows that seatbelts can reduce the risk of injury or death in a crash by up to 65%.
