Mendon Looking At Move To 8 Man Football
Friday, October 23, 2020

MENDON – The Mendon football program is looking at a move to 8 man football for 2021.

During Monday's Mendon Board of Education Meeting, Athletic Director Glen Samson and Varsity football coach Bobby Kretschman shared with the Board that with numbers down at all levels, 8 man football is the way to go for the sustainability of thenprogram.

Kretschman says they were hesitant when they went to their first 8 man game. But the Mendon JV team has been playing it and he says when it was over, he was still coaching kids, and the game still teaches important life lessons. Kretschman says there is still blocking and tackling going on.

Mendon Superintendent Leasa Griffith says the low numbers isn't just an issue for football. Girls basketball, is also seeing fewer players along with other sports.

Samson says if Mendon decides to make this move, it should be decided soon so they can start putting schedules together. Samson says if Mendon does to 8 man, they would like to form a league with other Southwest 10 schools who have also gone 8 man. Samson says that would give Mendon 3 games and he would have to go out and find 6 games.

The Board told Samson to start the process of moving to 8 man football and to keep them updated.
