Coldwater Man Critically Injures An Orland Man In Accident

ORLAND – A Coldwater was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and causing an accident that critically injured an Orland man.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Office was called on Sunday, April 14 at approximately 6:30 p.m. for a two=vehicle crash near S.R. 327 and C. R. 650 N.

When they arrived, deputies found two vehicles facing each other on the west side of the road.

The investigation determined that Charles Beerman, 34, of Coldwater was driving a north on S.R. 327, and pulling a construction trailer.

As he approached the intersection of County Road 650 North, Beerman decided to pass two other vehicles that were in front of him.

Paul Pence, 68, of Orland, was two vehicles in front of Beerman and attempted to make a left hand turn on C.R. 650 N.

Beerman struck Pence broadside.

Pence was trapped in his truck, and had to be removed by the Orland Fire Department and Steuben County EMS.

He was then flown by Parkview Samaritan Helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

He is listed in critical condition in the ICU.

Beerman was taken into custody and transported to the Steuben County Jail.

He is being held on felony charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction.

He is also being held on misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.

Beerman’s bond was set at $5,000
