City-Sponsored Microgrant to Spur Jobs, Aid Entrepreneurs
By: Geoffrey Chiles

[SHEILA INTRO]: The Angola Common Council met on Monday night. Entrepreneurship and its' future in the area headlined the agenda. WLKI's Geoffrey Chiles has more...

[VOICER]: The city's support of entrepreneurship took center stage. City council member Kathleen Armstrong introduced a motion to spur entrepreneurship. Funding would essentially come from a city investment fund, which has been in existence since 2012. Business expansion and job creation in Angola would benefit from the fund.
Armstrong asked the Council to earmark $100,000 for a microgrant project. Applicants must attend a meeting, show the strength of their idea with monies already in hand, and pass a rigorous board assessment. In the program, only two applicants would be chosen per year, with a maximum of $12,500 awarded per applicant. Monies would not be doled out in one lump sum, but smaller amounts.
The news of the entrepreneurship fund comes on the heels of Tower Townhouses going to the Planning Commision for development approval. Tower plans to be a living-learning-working hub of artists and entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship creation and launching businesses are the focal points of the microgrant project.
Councilmember Armstrong extended an invitation to the rest of the council to listen to entrepreneur pitches, ask questions, and spur further dialogue on the subject. Mayor Hickman reiterated that developing homegrown businesses in Angola while giving entrepreneurs a boost to get to the next level is critical. The motion was passed by the Council.
In other news, the compensation of officers, deputies, and other police and firefighters in the City of Angola will see their compensation increase. The Council voted to increase pay by 2.5% in 2019. Reporting for WLKI news, I'm Geoffrey Chiles.

[SHEILA OUTRO]: If you're interested in being considered for the entrepreneurship microgrant, the meeting will be held at City Hall on Monday, August 20th at 5:00pm.
