Late Friday morning, you may have noticed the Samaritan Helicopter in Steuben County, as it landed at Fremont High School.

Every 90 seconds, someone is injured in a drunk driving crash, and every 53 minutes someone dies in a drunk driving crash, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Since the late 1980's and early 1990's, paramedics and educators around the country have been intent on making these statistics real for teens by staging mock drunk driving crashes at high schools across the country.

In a world of cell phone's and modern technology, texting and cell phone use has become an additional concern.

Friday morning the Fremont Police Department, area emergency personal, school officials, and community members staged a mock crash, but instead of alcohol being a factor, the scenario involved a teen driver texting while behind the wheel.

The mock tragedy gave those who viewed it a grisly visual of the effects of distracted driving.

In the Fremont crash, emergency personal, including the Parkview Samaritan Helicopter, and a group of students and staff collaborated to send an anti-texting while driving message to students at Fremont High School. The mock crash was witnessed by the entire high school study body.

During the demonstration, one student portrayed a victim who was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency personnel demonstrated exactly what a full response to crash would look like, even a herse from a local funeral home loading the deceased victim from the scene.

Although the scene was a portrayal, it was sobering to watch. The demonstration can be viewed on a video posted to our facebook page.

Today's mock accident at Fremont High School is a reminder for drivers of any age to be safe when behind the wheel. While driving, don't put yourself in others in jeopardy by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Also remember to keep your eyes forward and hands on the wheel, not on a cell phone or other smart device.

Assisting the Fremont Police Department at the mock scene Friday was the Fremont Fire Department, Steuben County E.M.S., Parkview Samaritan Helicopter, the County Coroner’s Office, Beam’s Funeral Home, Steuben County Communications, Steuben County Emergency Management Agency, First Call Towing & Recovery Ashley Hoos with KPC Media, Sheila McCrea with Swick Broadcasting's WLKI.
