Monday, June 17, 2019

The Indiana Historical Bureau has approved a nomination for an official state historic marker honoring Will Cuppy. The marker was one of 32 approved around the state and will be the 4th such state historic marker to be installed in DeKalb County.

Will Cuppy was born and raised in Auburn in a home built by his grandfather Stahl. He went on to become a famous author, critic and humorist. He died in New York City in 1949 and is buried next to his mother in Auburn's Evergreen Cemetery. The hope by many is to have the new marker installed in September in time for what would had been Cuppy's birthday. This will be the fourth such marker in DeKalb County, and first in Auburn in 22 years. The others are the ACD Museum, the Spencerville Covered Bridge, and the Creek Chub Bait Co in Garrett. The latter being installed in 2017.

The Cuppy marker will be installed in the right away of his childhood home on the northwest corner of 11th and South Jackson Streets in Auburn.
