LANSING – State officials say contact tracing capacity in Michigan is not keeping up with the number of new COVID-19 cases.
During a Tuesday news conference, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun shared that because of a surge in the spread of the virus over the last two months, Michigan is averaging over 6,600 new cases a day.
Michigan also reported more new cases of COVID-19 during the month of November than all previous months combined. That means people who have been exposed to COVID-19 may not have been contacted and could unknowingly be spreading the virus.
Both Khaldun and Governor Gretchen Whitmer said on Tuesday that too many people traveled over the Thanksgiving weekend, and they believe it could result in a spike in cases and deaths.
Khaldun said anyone who traveled over the holiday weekend should isolate for two weeks. Whitmer says State leaders are still deciding whether the current three week partial shutdown, which goes through December 8, would be extended or not.
